User Access Privileges when Using RISC and New Configuration Options

NEXT

RISC v9 adds a variety of new functions and features, continually improving since its initial release 15 years ago in 1995. The RISC Preference screen shown here is accessed from the Configure menu in the RISC Admin program and is critical to the effective setup of the application for your school. The User-Definability of RISC starts with this screen from where it is possible to rename data fields, specify where RISC is located and the new facility - RISC Security Levels and Passwords.

The top section of this screen defines the passwords for the four different user security levels now included with RISC v9. Previously, RISC only relied upon the Network Security privileges applied by your server. Now, in addition to that security, RISC  provides its own and rather than implementing the complexity of individual usernames and passwords for every staff member at your school, RISC v9 opts for group passwords, with the four security groups being RISC Administrator, RISC Executive, RISC Editor and RISC Viewer. These are clearly detailed in the RISC Helpdesk System.  Basically, each security group has its own password for opening and accessing RISC, and depending on which password was used to open RISC, different software privileges are applied. We STRONGLY recommend that you set passwords for each of the four Security Levels when configuring RISC.

Another new feature on this screen is the addition of another user-definable field for RISC, being the Contact Type 2 field, or as named here, the Motivation field. The new field is named Motivation by default, allowing staff to further categorise each contact record by the reason that the incident occurred - what motivated the student to behave that way? - If you decide you'd rather use that new field for something completely different, go ahead - change it here and complete the Type 2 Lookup Table to reflect the entries that would go into the field of your choosing.  RISC is extremely flexible and customisable. No two schools need run RISC the same way.

Finally, at the very bottom of the RISC User-Definable Field Name Definitions are the namings for the three RISC Alert tabs in the new RISC Alerts and Notifications sub-system. It is recommended that you leave these named as shown here, but it is possible to rename the first two tabs if desired.  More details on Configuring RISC can be found in the RISC HelpDesk System.
