Making RISC work with .DOCX files for Formletters and Reports:

With the release of RISC v9.30 it is possible to convert all form letters to .DOCX format to take advantage of many new features offered by Office 2007 and 2010, such as lookup tables and pick lists. By default, RISC works with .DOC files which makes it fully compatible with all versions of MS Office from 2000 through to 2010, all of which are still used by schools throughout the world, but this limits the features available to those provided by Office 2003.

If your school has standardised the version of Office used on all computers to either 2007 or 2010 or a mix of both only, you may want to convert your RISC installation to work with the .DOCX format rather than .DOC.  This is a manual process, but can be completed fairly quickly.

From any PC that has Office 2010 or 2007 loaded, you need to complete the following steps to update Form Letters:

  1. Locate the folder where RISC is installed (right-click the RISC desktop shortcut and choose Properties. Then click Find Target (XP) or Open File Location (Win 7/Vista)

  2. Open the DATA folder, then open the FORMLTRS folder

  3. Locate the file RISCMAST.DOC and double-click it to open in Word 2007 or 2010.

  4. Choose File...Save As and select Word Document. It should automatically save as RISCMAST.docx then close Word.

  5. Next, you'll need to locate any document with a filename in the form RISCFLxx.DOC where xx are two digits.

  6. Double-click one of those files to open it in Word 2007 or 2010.

  7. Choose File...Save As and select Word Document. It should automatically save as RISCFLxx.docx then close Word.

  8. Repeat steps 5-7 for all remaining form letter documents.

  9. Once complete, you can remove all .DOC files (maybe back them up somewhere before deleting!)

From any PC that has Office 2010 or 2007 loaded, complete the following steps to update the Report Master File:

  1. Locate the folder where RISC is installed (right-click the RISC desktop shortcut and choose Properties. Then click Find Target (XP) or Open File Location (Win 7/Vista)

  2. Open the DATA folder, then open the REPORTS folder

  3. Locate the file REPTMAST.DOC and double-click it to open in Word 2007 or 2010.

  4. Choose File...Save As and select Word Document. It should automatically save as REPTMAST.docx then close Word.

  5. Once complete, you can remove the REPTMAST.DOC file (maybe back it up somehere before deleting!) - NOTE: There may be existing pre-saved report files in this folder and they will all be .DOC files. There is no need to update them to .DOCX format. RISC will still open them just fine. By updating REPTMAST.DOCX, it means all future new reports will be .DOCX format.

Replacement RISCMAST.doc and REPTMAST.doc Files:
